Marengo Elementary School in the South Pasadena Unified School District in South Pasadena, California has been recognized by the U. S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2020. The program recognizes schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
This year the year the Blue Ribbon was awarded to just 33 public schools in California. Schools are recognized based on student scores, academic performance of specific student groups, and graduation rates. They are among the state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is now celebrating it’s 38th year of recognizing academic achievement.
It is a testament to the quality of South Pasadena’s elementary schools and overall academic excellence to note that Marengo Elementary joins Arroyo Vista Elementary and Monterey Hills Elementary in winning this prestigious award. Arroyo Vista and Monterey Hills earned Blue Ribbon Schools status in 2019.
The Education Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates:
- Exemplary High Performing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or national tests.
- Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.
